Historical Commissic Date September 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The house at #14 Chestnut Street is one of the only remaining residential dwellings in this section of Somerville which was cleared for an industrial park in the 1960s. It is historically significant for its association with the development of this area. The house retains its integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The dwelling at #14 Chestnut Street (an extension of Joy Street) is one of the only remaining examples of housing in this area of Somerville. Although exhibiting the standard three-bay, side-hall entrance plan this house has unusual and interesting decorative trim. Double brackets carry the doorhood and the panelled lower transoms are elaborated with punched floral designs. Built on a brick foundation the original clapboard siding is covered with asphalt brick siding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the - building relates to the development of the community.
Located in an area that was once densely populated with modest housing for factory workers, #14 Chestnut Street is the only surviving residential dwelling and is representative of the type of housing once common place to the area. Large scale demolition of residential structures took place in the 1960s for an industrial park. This area was the location of the important Joseph Barrell House (1792) and the 19th century Mclean's Asylum. also adjacent to the railyards of the Fitchburg and Boston and Maine railroads from the mid- 19th century. Only a few of the platted streets in this section of Somerville were developed with housing, Joy and its extension, Chestnut Street being two of those. By the 1890s these streets were densely developed with closely built houses and many rowhouses as well.
