Historical Cormission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Charles H. Lockhart House retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. A finely detailed example of the Queen Anne style, the building fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the comnunity.

A projecting bay above the building's side entry is curved with panes of stained glass. Early photographs show that the house had a typical Queen Anne style gabled porch roof and turned posts. Georgian Revival balustrades and posts were substituted early in the 20th century. The property also retains a hip roofed, carriage house with a cupola of the same period. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Elm Street north of Davis Square was renamed College Avenue some time in the late 1890s. A number of fine houses were built by Somerville businessmen between the Square and Powerhouse Circle, Charles H.
Lockhardt a Somerville undertaker, chose this area to build his house. The Russell subdivision on the adjoining streets of Summit, Williams, and Buckingham was built up with a similar class of fine houses.
