Historical Elaanssion Date May 1983 NATIONAL CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) This modest cottage, one of the earliest residences surviving in Somerville, retains integrity of design, workmanship, and association and fulfills Criterion C and Exception B of the National Register of Historic Places on the Tocal level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This smal1 four bay, 1.1/2-story, gable-roofed house appears to predate all houses in the immediate area and most in Somerville; simple millwork and the 1cw-pitched roof are keys to its probable eighteenth century date. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. It is likely that this building was moved to its current site, as no structures appear of this site on nineteenth century maps. The earliest roads in the area are Beacon Street, built in 1813 as the Hampshire Turnpike, and Washington Street, part of the "Road to Newtowne,"in existence by 1630. At least one seventeenth century settler had a house in this vicinity, John Wolrich, trader, built his house at the intersection of Dane and Washington Streets, near this site.
This bufidirg is included in this MRA because it is a well preserved, and 1ikely one of the earliest, buildings in Sarerville. Haps and architectural details indicate that the building was moved to this location during he nineteenth century, while it was probilly constructed during the eighteenth century. It is to the rea of its lot which it shares with 72 Dane Street, bordering the Large City of Somerville lot located parallel to Magnus Street. The house at 72 Danestteet is not included, only the house at 72k Dane Street and its environs. 445681 85.B7 4175- 15.0 AT. LOTS M B IS 35254 18 H. 1000 DANE AVE. SKEHAN ST. #133 = 100' 7930 - PT.
