Historical Commission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) TheHighland, one of Somerville's most elegant late-19th century apartment blocks, retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. Historically, the building significant as a direct result of Somerville's vast development as a popular Boston bedroom community at the turn of the century.
The Highlands architectural significance lies in its well-proportioned Richardsonian Romanesque design. The building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Highland, is one of Somerville's outstanding late nineteenth century apartment buildings and a fine example of the Richardsonian, Romanesque style. A corner tower with slate-covered conical roof and a low-hung Romanesque entrance arch are significant features of the masonry design. The brownstone-trimmed brick buildings were finished with marble entrances, tile floors, and oak trim. Its prominent corner site atop Central Hill offered excellent views of Boston and beyond.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Highland's architect was Boston-based Samuel Dudley Kelley, a noted designer of apartment buildings. Kelley's 1892 building was well-advertised throughout the Boston area as Somerville's leading apartment house. The twelve suites, commanded a view of Central Hill Park, City Hall, and the surrounding area. Advertisers of the hotel commended the location, which was near the Winter Hill Station, providing 88 trains per day to Boston.
