Historical Commission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 343 Highland Avenue, a two-family residence typical of those built on the site of Somerville's brickyards in the late 19th century, retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.
The Queen Anne-style building is distinguished by its particularly ornate exterior embellishments, and thus fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the comnunity. 343 Highland Avenue is a good example of one variety of the Queen Anne-style: the 2 1/2 story two-family house. Distinctive characteristics of this variety are the elaborate jigsaw ornamental bargeboard and friezework, which adorn the first and second story porches. The building is otherwise a simple two family residence with paired brackets on its front facing gable and modest dentilated lintels adorning its 1/1 windows.
This residence is one of the best conserved of a group of approximately twenty such two-family houses in the Davis Square and Somerville Highland Station area. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This area was not open for residential development until the Tufts brickyard, which extended over a large portion of the Powerhouse neighborhood and included this corner, was divided in the 1870s. Once divided, the area filled quickly, primarily with two-family homes intended for commuters. 343 Highland Avenue may have been the work of Somerville builder A. D.
