Historical Commission Date May 1900 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENI (if applicable) One of the oldest surviving residences in Somerville, 6 Kent Court is a Georgian-style residence such as were once scattered near 18th century Milk Row. Like many Somerville buildings it was probably moved at the turn of the century. The building retains integrity of design, workmanship, feeling, and association and fulfills Criterion C and Exception B of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.
ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Keys to the early (ca. 1750) construction date of this house are the narrow; steep pitched gambrel roof, and 5 bay facade with a central entrance. The building is one bay deep with an added lean-to. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Although this house may have been moved from Somerville Ave, the history of Kent Court is worth not ing. There are several early nineteenth century houses on Kent Court, and a few of possible earlier construction date.
Although Hale's 1830 map of Charlestown shows no structures here, Kent Street was a connector between the 1813 Beacon Street and 17th century Milk Row (Tater Somerville Ave.) The 1852 Draper Map of Somerville shows 4 houses in the vicinity. By 1874 Kent Court was a short street squeezed between the Reitenback Brothers Mink Tannery, the Middlesex Bleachery, and the tracks of the Fitchburg RaiTroad.
