ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Worthen House is unique to its neighborhood, 3-bay, 11/2 story Gothic Revival house which contributes a picturesque quality to the Mt. Pleasant/Perkins area. The house is distinguished by its intact foliated vergeboard and turned drop porch trim. The sidehall plan entrance has glazed sidelights and transom. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Mt. Pleasant Street was one of the two streets (in the Mt.
Vernon Street) platted in 1840 as part of a subdivision of the extensive Stearnes estate. Situated near the narrow pennisula connecting Somerville with Charlestown, the area known as East Somerville, was soon built up with industry, rail lines, and housing both for Boston businessmen and local laborers. Both single and multifamily dwellings were constructed. The first owner of this house, Daniel Worthen, was a distiller.
