Historical Cormission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Grandview is a handsome example of an important turn-of-the-century building type in Somerville, the apartment/hotel. Designed to serve upper middle class commuters who were found in increasing numbers in the city at this time, the building was convenient to public transportation routes.
It is well-detailed example of the Colonial Revival style, and retains integrity of location, design, materials, feeling, and association. The Grandview fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local 1evel. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Grandview was constructed in 1896 on the southern slope of Prospect Hill and commands one of the most extensive and beautiful views in Somerville. While the 3 1/2-story building has undergone some changes in fenestration (with large-paned sliding glass windows substituted for bay and gable windows on the main facade), the building's form and ornament are otherwise unaltered. The main facade features a handsome two-story entry porch whose broad entablature is supported by Doric pillars.
The central gable is adorned with both modillions and dentils and is enclosed, suggesting a temple front. At the rear, there are three broad porches, one opening from each floor and extending across the length of the building. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. One of the finest apartment buildings in Somerville, the Grandview was conducted on speculation from Somerville alderman Elbridge G. Park. The building was open for occupance on April 1, 1986, and represents a gracious style of multifamily living that was not uncommon in Somerville at the turn of the century. By 1900, the City Directory listed 45 such "apartment hotels," most of which, like the Grandview, were located close to convenient public transportation routes.
