A well conserved example of Somerville's most popular late Victorian architectural style, the building is representative of the city's boom period construction patterns during the late-19th century. The house thus fulfills Criterion -Cof the National Register of Historic Place on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This well conserved wood frame residence displays many features typical of a high styled Queen Anne house: asymmetrical facade with front and canted gable-roofed bays, a side oriel and conical, finial capped roof, tall masonry chimney, and integral porch with spindlework. The house is one of the best detailed examples of its style in the Prospect Hill area in eastern Somerville.
This house is included in the Samervidle MRA because it is the best detailed example of its Style in Prospect Hill Area.It is well preserved and maintains many of its original features. It is located in an area that originally had larger lots, indicating that the ariginal owners were businessmen and professionals. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Prospect Hill, an agricultural area well into the mid-19th century, had by the 1880s become a fashionable neighborhood for Somerville's most prominent citizens. Large single family residences, many on spacious lots, were erected to house both local businessmen and those who commuted to Boston. The nominated property was one of the last single family houses constructed during this boom period of residential construction.
It was apparently built on speculationby bus inessman-developer = Louville Niles, who had constructed his own home near by at 45 Walnut Street (MHC # 177). Niles built two houses on his large parcel in 1890. He lived at #45 Walnut St. and sold provisions in Faneiul Hall, Boston. Edward Tead, aanker, lived in this house throughout the 1890s.
