Setting The nominated property is located in an urban residential neighborhood, the Winter Hill section of north-central Somerville. Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 205 School Street is a well-preserved Second Empire-style cottage, finely detailed on a modest scale. It is the best example of its style in the late- 19th century development of Winter Hill.
The building retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. One of the best-crafted mansard-roofed cottages in the Winter Hill area, 205 School Street has distinctive projecting bays on both main and side facade eachwith four rectangular, pedimented windows on both first and attic story. A carved floral notification fills each broken pediment, wooden quoins at the corners emulate stone. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
205 School Street was one of the first houses to be built on School Street in the prime Winter Hill section of north central Somerville, after it was subdivided for lots following the Civil War.
