Historical Commissio Date September, 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Elisha Hopkins House is one of the only center gable, Italianate houses remaining in the Winter Hill area. It is important architecturally and retains integrity of location, setting, design, feeling and association. It fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places at the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.

The Elisha Hopkins House displays an Italianate plan that was popular in the 1850s and 1860s. Although the siding has been changed, the house retains its massing and setting. The three-bay house has a center gable, glazed oculi (round windows) in the gable ends and a full Colonial Revival porch with turned posts and an unadorned balustrade. One-story projecting bays flank the center entrance on the first floor. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Winter Hill, a 4000 foot drumlin in the north section of Somerville, was settled along Broadway (originally Winter Hill Road) and several rangeways extending south from Broadway.

Most of the School Street area between Medford Street and Broadway was not developed until the late-19th century with the exception of a few Italianate and Mansard houses on the east side. The rest was apple orchards belonging to Jonathan Poor. The Elisha Hopkins House, built before 1870, belonged to shipmaster, Hopkins. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Hopkins, G.M.
