Nichols House retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmansh1p, and association and as a well preserved and finely detailed example of the Queen Anne style.
It fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The John F. Nichols House is representative of the fine Queen Anne-style houses built in the Williams Russell Farm subdivision between 1886 and 1900. The house has a prominent corner oriel or bay, shingled gables, and jigsawed trusswork in the gable ends. Turned posts and a jigsawed frieze board decorate the full front porch. The decorative detailing is well preserved throughout. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. John Nichols is recorded as the owner of this house in 1895, but his occupation is not traceable in city directories.
It is likely that he was a local merchant or businessmen, as many of the early owners in this then suburban subdivision were. The William Russell estate, north of Davis Square, was one of the last large tracts to be subdivided in West Somerville. lots were platted ca. 1880. The comfortable, stylish homes of the subdivision have a decided "surburban" quality, in contrast to the earlier workers' houses of nearby Wallace, Chandler, and Park Streets.
