The area is residential with mostly late-19th century dwellings Recorded byBetsy Friedberg Organization Massachusetts Historical Comm. Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Russell House is a well-preserved example of a modest Greek Revival-style residence such as was once quite common in Somerville.

The house retains integrity ot location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 58 Sycamore Street is a simple but well-conserved Greek Revival style house. The overhanging eaves appear to have been rebuilt, but the recessed, sidelit Greek Revival entry is intact. A batten door and cornerboards are features of the original design. The house is a 1 1/2 stories in height and 3 bays wide, with a side entryway and a rear ell. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.

Until it was developed in the late nineteenth century, Sycamore Street functioned primarily as a road to the Tufts House (78 Sycamore Street). The 1852 Draper map shows a house at this location. It is likely that is was constructed after the Boston and Lowell Railroad built the rail line immediately adjacent in 1835. Originally, this was Tufts family property. In 1850, however, it may have belonged to John Russell, a Medford Street grover. In 1874, it belonged to Susan Russell, his widow.
