Historical Conmission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) 35 Temple Street, one of Somerville's few houses dating to pre 1800, retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. wel1-preserved example of late Georgian/early Federal styling, that like many early Somerville buildings, was relocated at the turn of the century.
It fulfills Criterion C and Exeption B of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the connunity. 35 Temple Street is one of the earliest houses still standing in Somerville. Many of the five-bay house's original features are intact, including the steep-pitched, narrow gambrel roof typical of the Georgian style as well as 6/6sash and four-panel exterior doors with full-length sidelights. It compares favorably with other early undocumented houses in Somerville. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
35 Temple Street was probably moved to its present site in Ten Hills area in the early 20th century, as it does not appear on any of the 19th century atlases. It was likely moved from Broadway or Mystic Avenue. The house is now situated on the 17th century road to Governor Winthrop's house at Ten Hills Farm. This road became Temple Street, the route to Robert Temple's 18th century house, and Samuel Jacques's stock farm. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Atlas of the City of Somerville, 1874 Hopkins, G.M.
