Historical Comnission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Otis House is a well detailed Queen Anne style residence whose successive owners, William Otis and Charles Wyman, the businessmen and other professionals who moved into the Winter Hill section of Somerville in the late- 19th century.
The house retains integrity of location, design, workmanship, and association and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Otis Wyman House is an exceptional example of the Queen Anne style in Somerville. Despite two layers of siding, the house retains much of its original decorative trim, including pressed and carved wooden ornament, foliated bargeboard, asecond story balcony resting on consoles. picturesque asymetrical roofline with numerous hooded dormers and varied window size and placement is typical of the Queen Anne style. Much original material survives intact on the interior, including plaster cornices and ceiling medallions and Minton tile fireplace surrounds.
HISTORICAL SICNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Otis/Wyman House was the first built on this block of Thurston Street after the area was subdivided by mustard and spice manufacturors in the early 1880s. Thurston Street developed with attractive Queen Anne and Colonial Revival style houses built by speculators for Somerville bus inessmen. William R. Otis a cabinetmaker, was the owner of the nominated property in 1884. By 1897, it was the residence of Charles B. Wyman, a restaurant owner. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Hopkins, G. M.
