A well-preserved vernacular example of the pure Shingle Style on a modest scale, the building fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
42 Vinal Avenue is a well-conserved example of the Shingle Style in Somerville. Of particular importance is the continuous sheathing of decorative shingles in various shapes, which together form an unbroken "skin" side shelters an integral on the buflding's exterforentry porch.ngindole roof on the butlding's eastern are simply framed, save for a smal1 attic gable window, which is elaborated with the suggestion of volutes. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 42 Vinal Avenue is characteristic of the fine houses in the Vinal/Grandview Area of Prospect Hill, north of Union Square, Grandview, Vinal, and Pleasant Avenues were platted in response to the city's growing commuter population, many of whom desired stylish single-family residences.
