A stylish, well-detailed amalgamation of the Shingle and Colonial Revival styles, the building fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 49 Vinal Avenue is an important example of a transitional Shingle Style-Colonial Revival House. The 2 1/2-story house has a wide gambrel roof. The central entrance is set within a porch beneath a steep gambrel gable flanked by smaller hipped roof dormers. Colonial Revival motifs include the elliptical attic window on the facade, the applied wooden garlands of the dormers, and the curvilinear front porch. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity.
Somerville realtor Fred Haley appears to have built this house for speculative purposes; he resided nearby, at 17 Grandview Avenue. The district's dwelling at 49 Vinal Avenue occupies a prominent corner lot near the summit of Prospect Hill, above Union Square. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Bromley, G.
