Historical Commission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Wright House, a good example of the amalgamation of Queen Anne-style form and Shingle Style embellishment, retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, and association and fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Wright House demonstrates Queen Anne-style massing and form embellished by Shingle Style details and wall surfaces. The 2 1/2-story gable roofed house is asymmetrical, typical of the Queen Anne Style with a variety in window size and placement. A conical facade bay is offset to the right; a polygonal bay on ân ogee base with a spring eave roof is offset to the left.
The front entrance porch has wide shingled posts with a band of sawtooth shingles along the porch frieze. The rest of the house exhibits a variety of patterns in the cut wood shingles. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The builder of this late Victorian single-family residence, Walter Wright was a milk can manufacturer with offices in Charlestown. *He was active in the Universalist Church nearby: This house is include in this MRA because it retains the integrity of design associated with the Queen Anne style and ShingleStyle and is a particularly well preserved examples of these styles. The house faces east onto Vinal St.
arid is part of a residential neighborhood, several other examples of the shingle or Queen Anne style are also presented in this MRA, but this house is the only one namrinated wiich enbodies both styles.
