Lovejoy House retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, as well as association with Somerville's development in the decades following the Civil War.
The well detailed Second Empire-style house is characteristic of dwellings erected in the Prospect hill neighborhood for businessmen and professionals who commuted to Boston. The building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. This residence, built in 1874 is characteristic of the handsome Second Empire-style and Queen Anne-style houses of the Prospect Hill area. Columbus and Warren Streets were laid out for house lots by Somerville realtor Ira Hill in 1870, and this was one of the first houses to be built in the subdivision.
Two bays wide and 2 1/2 stories in height with a full-height polygonal bay on the main facade; it retains its roof of patterned slate shingles and its ornamentation: paired and single brackets, window hoods, flat-roofed, bracketed porch, and round-headed attic dormers. The mansard-roofed stable is of particular significance: it is one of the few remaining stables in Somerville with original surfaces and details intact. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. A. L. Lovejoy was a dealer in "fancy goods" in Boston. His former residence was on Highland Avenue near School Street; he probably lived in this house by 1874. 1872 Directories list his former address.
Like other residents who lived on Prospect Hill, Lovejoy could commute to Boston on the nearby street rail and steam rail systems, both of which stopped in Union Square.
