Historical Commissio september, 1988 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The well defined Italianate dwelling at 384 Washington Street retains integrity of location, design, materials, and workmanship. The house is illustrative of the elegant dwellings lining Washington Street in the mid to late-19th century.

The building is architecturally significant, thus, it fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The substantial one-half story dwelling is a well detailed Italianate house displaying fine detail and workmansnip. Retained ornamentation include the wide corner pilasters, the paired bracketed cornice, the flush board gable end, and the central oculus which is surrounded by a carved wood garland. The full length gable end porch has trusses and brackets. The house is a fine architectural example of the type of house that was popular in mid-19th century Somerville. Its importance is derived from the fact that there are only a few remaining in the Ward II area.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Charles Schuebeler House is one of the only extant mid-19th century Washington Street and is representative of the types of that once lined the streets in this part of Ward II. The proximity to Cambridge and transportation made this area of Washington Street between Union Square and Kirkland Street, Cambridge a fine location for elegant residences built on substantial lots. The late 1860s owner was Charles Schuebeler who was a jeweler. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Hopkins, G.M., Atlas of the City of Somerville, 1874.
