Johnson OrganizationQuincy Historical Cormission Date July 1, 1986 / May 1987 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Wollaston Branch library is asscciated with the development of Quincy's commercial and civic neighborhood centers, and with the expansion of municipal services in the 1920s. The finely scaled library is a well preserved example of Classical Revival architecture that retains integrity of design, location, materials, setting, workmanship, feeling, and association, and fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 41 BEALE STREET WOLLASTON BRANCH LIBRARY The public library system began in Quincy in 1871 when the citizens voted tc appropriate $3,500 plus the proceeds of the dog tax for the salary of librarian and the upkeep of a library building if an equal amount could raised by private subscription. Public response was so fervent that a library opened that very same year in the Adams Academy Building on Adams Street (1872; NR) . Three years later the library was transferred to the vacated Evangelical Congregational Church, at Revere Road and and Hancock Streets, where it remained until 1882. That year the main library was opened in Henry Hobson Richardson's magnificent Thomas Crane Public Library at 40 Washington Street (1881; NR).
Given the suburban settlement of North Quincy in the first guarter of the twentieth century, it is not surprising that residents began to desire a Similar growth in West Quincy led to the establishment of a branch there in 1921 although the building is no longer The Wollaston Women's Club undertook a fundraising: campaign and presented the land for the library to the Trustees of the Thomas Crane Library. A portion of the Crane Memorial Fund was used to build the $15,000 structure on a site convenient to two neighborhood schools. In 1922. the Wollaston Branch of the Thomas Crane Library was erected on Beale Street near its intersection with Hancock Street. The area around this intersection developed as a commercial and civic neighborhood center in the 1920s.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE -- 41 BEALE STREET WOLLASTON BRANCH LIBRARY One of two branch libraries erected in Quincy in the early 1920s (the other is in West Quincy), the Wollaston Library is a well-preserved example of the Classical Revival style applied to a small public building. The building remains in use as a library and is the grander of the two small libraries designed by William Chapman, a Boston architect, who lived in Wollaston.
Chapman designed several other public buildings in Quincy in the 1920s although the Wollaston Library is the only one with sufficient integrity to be included in the nomination. The one-story rectangular stucco structure has a hip roof and an elegant entrance within a projecting central gabled pavilion. transomed door is set within a mitered surround and is framed by Ionic pilasters, topped with a dentilled entablature, and capped with a richly embellished arched pediment. Within this pediment is a book in low relief framed by acanthus leaves. under an arched panel reading "Thomas Crane Public Library." To emphasize the richness of the entrance, a contrasting granite band was placed-over the arched pediment.
