Among Quincy's best preserved examples of the Craftsman Bungalow on a modest scale, the building fulfills Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. DICEY HOUSE The house at 56 Pope Street is characteristic of the modest single-family dwellings erected in North Quincy neighborhoods in the early 20th century.
The house was built in 1918 by contractor Russell M. Dicey at a cost of $3,000. Dicey owned the house for several years. By 1927 it was owned by William D. Thiesfeldt an optometrist. 56 Pope was built on what was once the Micaih Pope farm one of the farms of North Quincy subdivided in the late 19th century by developers, who were encouraged by - the arrival of the Old Colony Railroad in 1845 and the street railway in 1888. Purchased from Jane Pope by Arthur McCellan in 1883, this land was platted in the 1880s and 1890s. The area became known as "Montclair." As in the adjacent neighborhoods of Atlantic, Wollaston, and Norfolk Downs, much of the construction of modest suburban houses occurred in Montclair during the first two decades of the twentieth century.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE - - 56 POPE STREET RUSSELL M. DICEY HOUSE The house at 56 Pope Street is a well-preserved archetypal example of the Craftsman Bungalow style. The modest one-and-a-half story dwelling has several characteristic elements including the gabled front porch with a fieldstone base; heavy tapered short posts; and brackets under the eaves. The combination of the wood shingles, in a pattern of alternating wide and narrow rows, and the fieldstone foundation add visual interest to the walls of the house.
The overhanging eaves supported by shaped brackets, the low pitched gabled roof and the varied walling materials all contribute to make this residence an attractive component in the Pope Street streetscape. A garage at the rear of the property is noncontributing.
