Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Charles Baker Property is an unusually well preserved example of the double-house type that proliferated on Waltham's South Side in the late 19th century. It retains original clapboard siding as well as decorative Stick Style features. of industrial workers, it is also an important illustration of the late 19th century devel- opment of the South Side by the Waltham Watch Company.
The house possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations, and meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 119-121 Adams Street is a well-preserved example of a type of late 19th century double-house, which appears throughout Walthan's warkers' neighborhoods. Possessing an irregular plan, it stands with broad, end-wall gable facing Adams Street. Projecting from the gable are a pair of 2-story, octagonal bays. Cross-gables project from the side-walls. The entrances to the duplex are located on the side-wall, and are open to the porches nestled in the corners of the main block and cross-gables. Porches are also located on the west side of the cross gables.
These porches exhibit stick-style cross-bracing. The front doors are enframed by plain pilasters, with cornice -headed lintels. In general, windows are fully-enframed with cornice-headed lintels, and contain 2/2 sash. Small, curvilinear brackets with incized, circular details appear at the house's corners, beneath the eaves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built on the Fuller-Bemis Farmhouse's lot ca. 1881-1883. The Fuller-Bemis Farmhouse was built ca. 1776. Its lot represents the nucleus of 160 acre farm, which until the 1850's, was one of the very few houses on the South Side (purchased from Newton by Waltham in 1849).
The Boston Watch Company (later the American Waltham Watch Company) acquired this parcel, along with 160 acres of the old Fuller-Bemis Farm, in 1854. This parcel remained under the control of the American Waltham Watch Company until ca. early 1880's. By 1886, Charles Baker, an American Watch Company employee and owner of 107 Adams Street, owned #119-121 Adams Street. By the early 1920's, this house was owned by G. L. Keith, carpenter (#119). James A. Fulton, steam-fitter, rented #121 from Mr. Keith.
