Jenkins 3/88 - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Sybbill Banks House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work- manship, feeling and associations. Built for a single working woman of some repute, it was among the first of several Queen Anne and other turn-of-the-century homes to be built in the Appleton Street area. It is an unusually well-detailed and well-preserved vernacular example of the Queen Anne style. The Banks House meets criterion C of the National Regis- ter of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Banks House, built in 1892, is a well-detailed and well-preserved vernacular example of the Queen Anne style. It is built on an L-plan and rises 2½ stories to a gable roof. It is sheathed with clapboards and patterned shingles in the gable fields. A verandah with spindle valance and balustrade and turned posts, extends across the facade and around the south elevation; a pediment with Queen Anne sunburst detail marks the entry location. - The projecting cross gable on the rear of the south elevation has chamfered sides topped by spindle valances that echo the porch detail. Modified palladian windows light both the south and front gable fields. Iwo asymmetrically placed stairway windows and an oculus ; are found on the north elevation.
Some windows display typical Queen Anne sash with multi-pane over single pane sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 27 Appleton Street was built in 1892 for E. Sibbill Banks (1851-1929), daughter of Colonel Nathaniel P. Banks (see form #-124) of Waltham, a Civil War and local hero. Sibbill Banks, a single woman, was prominent in Waltham's amateur theatre and taught elocution. For a number of years she was in the Somerville Post Office and later in the Centrai - Office in Boston. She was one of the first women to be pensioned by the Federal govern- ment. In 1910, before she retired, Ms. Banks sold 27 Appleton Street to Warren Eaton, a mechanical engineer who had recently married. There he and his wife, Lucy, raised two daughters, Mary (1911- ) and Lucy (1913-1985).
The house remained in the daughters' trust until it was eventually sold in 1984 to Peter and Elaine Smerlas.
