Jenkins 2/88 -aLtham MA Ma - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Jonathan Hammond House is significant as a rare Waltham example of a substantial, late 18th century Georgian house . Build ca. 1785, it has significant historical associations with Waltham's Hammond, Lyman and Warren families, and thus with Waltham's agricultural, estate and institutional history.
It possesses integrity of location, design, materials, setting, workmanship, feeling and associations. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Prominently sited at the head of Linden Street, on the north side of Beaver Street, 311 Beaver is a good example of a late Georgian/Federal house. Although it has been altered by the application of synthetic siding, its aluminum "clapboards" approximate the width of wooden clapboards. distinctive boxy form, hip-roof, and handsome entrance enframe ents. Its 5-bay main facade exhibits a projecting and enclosed center entrance - the front door is flanked by multipane sidelights and paired, slender Doric pilasters. porch exhibits an entablature and deep cornice.
In general, the windows are simply enframed and contain 6/6 wood sash. The house's side walls exhibit two windows. It is enclosed by a hip-roof, with a massive, brick center-chimney, constructed in the First Period manner. Situated to HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house has historical associations with Waltham's Hammond, Lyman and Warren families. It is one of Waltham's few substantial late 18th century houses. #311 Beaver Street's lot was part of a much more extensive parcel purchased by Thomas Hammond from John Stowers on Oct 3, 1650 - this transaction involved a house and barn, but their exact location is not known.
Thomas Hammond died in 1655, leaving by will, "all the land bought of the Stowers to an unborn child at its arrival to the age of 21" - this child was Thomas Hammond 2nd. many years a resident of Ipswich, Massachusetts; he deeded all his real and personal property in Watertown to his son Thomas 3rd. Thomas 3rd and his wife Marry Harrington had nine children, and when he died in 1762, the farm was divided by a north and south line. #311 Beaver St's lot represents the part of the Hammond estate east of the dividing line - this eastern portion passed to Jonathan Hammond during the 1760's. The date of 1785 for the construction of the present house is based on the fact that Jonathan Jr. was married in 1785 when he was 21 years old.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, continued well above the average valuation. Jonathan 2nd died in 1801. In 1875, his heirs sold the place to Theodore Lyman. It was owned by the Lyman family for 30 *years. The house was occupied by his son George W. during his early married life, and probably until Theodore's death in 1839, when George W.
inherited the from his house to Main Street. Later owners of 311 Beaver Street included Rev. Dorus Clark (1849). In 1840, Henry M. Clarke sold this house to his brother-in-law, Samuel Dennis Warren. The house was used as a home for Mr. Warren's foreman. Later inhabitants included Mr. C.T. Cahill and Asa T. Pierce. ** The 1900 Atlas shows this house as part of the extensive Warren estate, with a long rectangular structure to the rear of the house, and two structures (including a shed) to the west of the house. At the present time, this house contains Bentley College's Center for Continuing Education. Bentley College was founded in 1917. Situated atop Waltham's Cedar Hill, the Bentley community consists of 36 buildings, most of which were built since 1968 when the college moved to its present site. The majority of the buildings are designed in the Neo-Colonial style.
Note: According to Marjorie W. Childs, the northern part of the house was sold to the Rev. Dorus Clark and his wife Hannah Alvard Bliss Clarke. They were the grandparents of Cornelia Warren and lived in this house from 1849 -1869. During changes of ownership, two ells were added, making 17 rooms in all.
