Jenkins 3/88 MILUHAL KCGIDIEK CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) This apartment house possesses integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship, feeling, and associations. It is significant as a link with Waltham's intensive turn-of-the-century residential expansion which took the form of multi-family dwellings. It is also a good ex- ample of the Colonial Revival style with all of its important detailing intact despite re- cent application of aluminum siding. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Situated on a densely-settled late nineteenth century residential street, 202-204 Charles Street is a well-preserved, multi-family building. Constructed of wood, it retains its clapboards and distinctive Colonial Revival elements. Its main facade is characterized by the two-tier projecting front porch which is flanked by octagonal bays. Fluted Tuscan columns are ranged along the porch, along with turned balusters. Fluted Doric pilasters appear at the building's edges. Dentils are used under the cornices over the center windows on the second floor and. the double entrance on the first. In general, windows are fully enframed with 8/1 wood sash. Both front doors have a large oval light and sidelights. Iwo-story octagonal bays appear on the side wall.
The house is situated on a brick basement and is enclosed by a flat roof with a deep cornice and modillion blocks. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played fn local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This apartment building was apparently built in 1913; its owner was Henry Milesky, who lived elsewhere on Charles Street. Because it was always a rental property it is difficult to trace the occupants, but in 1923 they included Dennis Sullivan, a conductor; George White, a buckle maker; John Klee a commerial artist who worked in Boston; Joseph MacNally, a foreman who also worked in Boston; Archibald McPherson and James Shea, linemen; and John Mansfield, a laborer.
