It is an imposing group of three mid-19th century and one early 20th century residences which together illustrate the development of Main Street as an elite residential area during that time period (ci840-c1900). These houses are on the sites of earlier buildings that in the late 18th and early 19th centuries com- prised an incipient village center. The present houses are among the city's best examples of the Greek Revival, Italianate and early Colonial Revival styles.
The district meets criteria A and C Of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other areas within the community. The East Main Street Historic District is located on Main Street, just west of its inter- section with Linden Street. It is comprised of four imposing high-style houses dating from the 1840s to c1900. They are among the best examples of their respective styles--Greek Re- vival, Italianate, Colonial Revival--in the city, and although two have been sided, all re- tain most of their important architectural features. The area is bounded by Main Street (N), Townsend Street (W), Chamberlain Terrace (E), and the rear lot lines of the houses included (S). The boundaries were drawn to recognize the unusually high quality of the houses in the district.
They exclude altered houses on the north side of Main Street, far less distin- guished houses on Townsend Street and Chamberlain Terrace, and recent cottages on Barton Individual houses are described below: The Lyman Reed House, 436 Main Street (1844-45; E72) is the earliest house in the distrigcoNT) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of area and how the area relates to the development of other areas of the community. The East Main Street Historic District is in an area that had developed as an incipient vil- lage center, with a collection of taverns, shops, stores and houses, in the 18th and early 19th centuries. After the establisheent of the Boston Manufacturing Company in 1813, the community focus shifted westward to the present city center, and commercial growth in this area slowed.
By the mid-19th century, most of the older mixed-use buildings were taken down to accomodate elite residential construction. An exception is the Hagar-Mead House - (1795; #69) that still stands across the street. In the second half of the 19th century, the east and west ends of Main Streets developed as affluent, high-style residential areas. e ros toneat sreas- In this district the large and imposing new houses were set well back from the traffic of the Great Road and were set off by granite curbing and posts which still remain. At the turn-of-the-century, Chamberlain Terrace and Townsend Street were laid out and developed with Queen Anne style houses of moderate quality. The Nutting House, at the corner of Main and Townsend Streets, was by far the most substantial house of this period. The area now has mixed residential, institutional and professional use.

Indicate each item on inventory form which is being continued below. Architectural Significance (cont) It is one of four remaining temple-front Greek Revival style houses in the city (see #s 97, 112, 115) and, although it has been sided and appears to have lost one of its four fluted Doric columns, it still retains many of its original elude full entablature, raking cornice, pilastered cornerboards, and full-length first story windows. Fortunately the siding preserves the appearance of original narrow clap- boards. The house was built by Jarvis E.
Goodrich a real estate developer, and subsequently sold to John P. Bent then Lyman Reed, both Boston merchants. The Francis Blanchard House, 428 Main Street (1850-54; E71) is one of two Italianate style houses in the district. It is an imposing story structure that faces a pedimented gable end to the street, but retains a center entry on the three bay side elevation. Although the house has been altered with narrow width vinyl siding, it retains its full entablature, raking cornice, pilastered cornerboard, full-length first story windows on the front ele- vation, and round arched windows in the dormers. This house was built by Francis Blanchard and subsequently owned by John Fairbanks; both were Boston merchants. The George W.
Chamberlain House, 418 Main Street (1850-54; E70) is one of the most elegant examples of the Italianate style in the city, and also draws some of its features from the concurrent Regency Greek Revival style. This symmetrical three bay structure rises stories to a projecting gable roof detailed with paired brackets and crowned by a belvedere. Its Regency features include flushboard siding, wide pilasters defining the corners and di- viding the bays, entry with sidelights and rectangular transom, and cast iron balconies at the second story. Like other property owners in the district, Chamberlain was a Boston merchant. The Chartes P. Nutting House, 446 Main Street (c1900; E73) is a finely detailed example of the early Colonial Revival style with strong Queen Anne/ Shingle Style overtones.
It is a 24 story shingle clad structure enclosed by a dominant gambrel roof that descends to the first story, and sweeps out to form a verandah across the facade; the projecting cornice is detailed with modillion blocks. The verandah is supported by a fieldstone base and piers with a round arched opening at the entry. A cross-gambrel with leanto profile dom- inates the east side of the facade. Other features of note include Palladian windows in the gables, oriel windows with curved shingle surrounds. other windows with broad dentiled cornices, and an entry with pilasters, paneling and multi-paned windows with stained glass. Mr. Nutting built and rented boats and canoes near the Prospect Street Bridge; he sold to Edward P. Sanderson, president of the Waltham Trust Company and a principal in the E.P. Sanderson Company in Boston, c1910.
