Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Whitney/Farrington/Cook House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as a reflec- tion of Trapelo Road's development from the 17th century to the 20th as the major transportation corridor in northern Waltham. It is also important as a well-pre- servedand sited vernacular example of an Italianate style farmhouse.
It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. #385 Road is a straight-forward, 3-bay x 2-bay, center-hall plan, Italianate house. Its 3-bay main facade features a Tuscan-columned entrance porch . Its entrance is flanked by multipane side-lights and simple pilasters. The front door is surmounted by an entablature. Retaining it's clapboard sheathing, this house's windows are fully enframed with raised moldings, and contain 6/ 6 wood sash. The narrow, 2-bay, east-and-west- facing, end-wal1-gables exhibit return-eaves. Beneath the main facade's eaves are fascia boards. To the rear is a one story ell. The house is set well back from Trapelo Road and iis surrounded by a wooded area.
Its significance is en- hanced by the rural qualities of its setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The early history of this house is something of a mystery, despite Edmund C. Sanderson's efforts to document the history of the property. According to Sanderson, the house's lot was part of the landholdings of the Hastings family prior to 1824. Joseph Hastings, housewright, evidently began acquiring property in this vicinity during the 1720's. His house was apparently on the south side of Trapelo Road. Later owners included his son Josiah Hastings, and his grandson Elijah Hastings. In 1829, Elijah sold his house on the north side, and barn on the south, to Miss Lucy Whitney; and the remainder of the estate was sold to Ebenezer Cheney of Watertown - Mrs.
Cheney being a sister of Elijah Hastings. The present house on this site may date to Abel Farrington's purchase of this property in 1858 - there is little structural evidence to suggest this house was the smallpox hospital referred to in Sanderson's account of the property. Sanderson states that "the house now standing on the premises formerly stood on Pigeon Hill where it was used as a small pox hospital." This house remained in the Farrington family until 1887. On Aug 26, 1887, Elijah Farrington sold this house to William E. Cook [see Middlesex County Deeds, 1813:341]. In July 1911, this house was sold, by William Cook to John W. Cook, for $4,000. William Cook stipulated that he and his wife were entitled to use the north bedroom "for our natural lives" , and that he was entitled "joint use, with the grantee, of the pantry and kitchen therein contained." Architecturally, this house represents a locally rare variation on an Italianate theme : the 3-bay, center hall plan Italianate house.
