Jenkins 3/88 - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Wellington-Castner House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It demonstrates the long-term presence of the Wellington family in the Trapelo Raod area, as well as the contin- uation of agricultural activities into the 20th century. It thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. #685 Trapelo is a restrained example of early 20th century, Queen Anne, wood-framed, vernacular architecture. It is a straight-forward, side-hall plan house, which rises 2 stories from a rubblestone foundation, to a broad, gable roof. Its front porch features a slat-work railing, with square porch posts. In general, its windows are simply enframed, with 1/1 wood sash. Its edges are accented by narrow cornerboards. Its attic is finely framed in a manner reminiscent of Greek Revival houses. Projecting from the west wall is an octagonal bay window. Still intact, abutting the northeast corner, is a 1-1/2-story clapboard-clad stable which is enclosed with a gable roof.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. #685 Trapelo Road is historically significant as one of the last houses built on Trapelo Road prior to suburban development. It was built c.1902 by Charles Lowel1 Wellington. As early as 1636, Roger Wellington was granted land in Watertown in what is now the Mount Auburn Cemetery. In 1659, he bought a house and 12 acres of land in the northern part of the town, now died in March 1697-98, age.88 years. settle in the West precinct (Waltham). His house was on the south side of Trapelo Road near the northeast corner of land now owned by the Walter E. the eese PesorEk (ecthan) . in Belmont. He His son, Joseph was the only one to Fernald State School. A Thomas and Rebecca Simmons Wellington purchased a farm at Trapelo Road and Woburn Street in 1718.
Charles Lowel1 Wellington was the last member of the family to hold the whole property. He sold #685 Trapelo Road to a William Thompson ca.1915. In 1918, the house was purchased by Ervin Castner, who married into the Wellington family.
