Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Nathan Sanderson II House is a unique architecutral type in Waltham. Its five bay, wide gable Greek Revival form reportedly results fron a c1816 remodeling of an existing house that may have had a date as early as 1698. The house possesses integrity of loca- tion, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations, and meets criterion C of epr yeas 16 the National Register of Historic Places, and exception criterion B for mored houses.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terims of other buildings within the community. The Nathan Sanderson II House is an example of the wide-gable Greek Revival type most com- monly found in the Merrimack Valley. It is a story, five bay house which presents its gable end, treated as a clasical pediment, to the street; it thus combines the traditional five bay center entrance entrance plan with the newly popular gable end orientation. It is clapboard clad and simply trimmed with cornerboards and a raking cornice. A quatrastyle Doric porch with fluted columns runs across the facade. The center entrance projects slightly and is framed by full length sidelights. Flanking windows, and the five aligned at the se- cond story, contain 6/6 sash and have narrow architraves; two additional windows are located in the large gable field.
Iwo wings extend from the north rear of the two bay deep house. This house was reportedly constructed c1698, and moved to the present site cl816 at which time it was substantially remodeled. A second story was added and the roof was turned 90° so that the gable was oriented over the five bay facade. Ankitchen/woodshed wing was added to the northwest, and on the east another kitchen connected with 107 Lincoln Street (removed 1918-23). HISTORICAL Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house is said to have originated as a l2 story cottage on the grounds of the Lyman Es- tate(NR/NHL)c1698. It was built by James Cutting and later owned by Joseph Stratton.
Tradition also holds that George Washington visited the house when he was stationed in Cambridge (1775-76) asd was so impresed with the herb garden' that he had it duplicated at Mt. Vernon. The house was reportedly moved to its present site by Nathan Sanderson II, son of Nathan Sanderson I who lived next door at 107 Lincoln Street (#153), at the time of his marriage in 1816. For many years there was a blacksmith shop associated with this property. It was built about 1740 and orignally was at the intersection of Lincoln and Winter streets. Nathan Sanderson I of the house at 107 Lincoln Street began using the shop about the time of the Revolution and taught his trade to Nathan II, who took over the shop when his father retired ca. 1810-20. In 1833 the shop was located close to the road just west of 111 Lincoln Street.
In 1844 Nathan II sold the business and rented the shop to a series of blacksmiths, and in 1854 the shop was moved to a site east of this house. In 1865 the shop was rented to Elias B. Armstrong, who built a house nearby at 508 Lexington Street (see form); Armstrong operated the shop until 1877 and then retired in favor of a nephew, Frank I. Wright. In 1882 the shop was torn down and Wright moved the business to Lexington Street where it was still operating in the late 1920s. This house continued to be occupied by members of the Sanderson family; in the early twentieth century it was owned by Horace Sanderson, a florist and market gardner.
