Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Warren White House is a well preserved vernacular mid-19th century farmhouse displaying such Italianate features as a symmetrical three bay facade, wide cornerboards and entab- lature, and round arched gable windows. It is also important as the oldest surviving house on Warren Street, an early route on the east side connecting to Watertown and Belmont. It possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations, and meets criteria C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
Set back from a residential street of twentieth century houses, this house is the only Italianate in the area and one of the few Italianate farmhouses in the city.. It is characterized by a three-by-one bay profile with a center entrance, a gabled roof, a cornice across the front, corner returns on the gable ends, wide corner boards, roundhead windows in the gables, paired windows over the entry with molded surrounds similar to those around the front door, an entry porch, what may be the original front door flanked by sidelights, and a brick foundation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in:local-or-state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house is on land that originally belonged to the Warrens, one of the earliest settlers in Waltham.
The property was purchased from the Warrens in 1834 by David White, a farmer from Concord, MA. White apparently occupied a house already on the property, which is shown on the 1836 map. In 1855 David White sold the farm to Warren White, a wheelwright, but Warren White had apparently already built this house, for it is labeled with his name on the 1854 map. By 1871 the property had been acquired by John Stafford, a marble worker in Boston and by the mid-1880s was occupied by Norman M. Stafford, also in the Boston marble business. About 1912 Walter S. Gay, a grocer, bought the property; the Gays apparently lived there briefly and then rented it. In 1923 the house was occupied by Wellington Ferguson, a salesman.
