Jenkins 3/88 - NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) # 50 Weston Street is a large, well-designed Queen Anne house built ca. 1889-1890. It retains its original form, materials,large lot and carriage house. For many years it was the home of Nathan A. Warren, one of Waltham's most prominent late 19th/early 20th century citizens - he was a politician, historian, outdoorsman, and member of numerous social/ civic organizations. This house meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. # 50 Weston Street ranks among the finest examples of the Queen Anne style in Waltham.
Built c.1889-1890, this house's clapboard-clad forn is of special interest - essentially rectangular in plan, its Weston Street facade (main facade), features a combination verandah/portecochere, whose ceiling possesses handsome tongue-and-groove woodwork. 1 verandah/portecoche exthibios Its verandah exhibits Tuscan columns, while its port cochere possesses square posts. Particularly noteworthy are the colorful staredglass transoms above windows on the second floor of the main facade. The rear wall is distinguished by its varied, projecting facade elements including conically-capped, circular corner-tower, and square, projecting 2-story bay. In general, this house's bay, dormers and end-walis are surmounted by fully enframed, steeply pitched gables with deep eaves, which gives the house a vaguely medieval appearance.
(cont) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. For many years #50 Weston Street was the home of Nathan A. Warren. During the late 19th/early 20th century, he was "probably the most widely known citizen in the entire city." Prior to this house's ca.1890's construction, this lot was part of the extensive land holdings of Nehemiah Warren - the 1874 map indicates that Nehemiah Warren owned much of the land bordering South Street between Charles Street and Weston Street. For many years, a T-shaped house with semi-circular driveway was located just to the east of the property and belonged to George Warren. Middlesex deeds suggest that #50 Weston Street was built ca.1889-1890 - the house's distinctive form very clearly appears on the 1898 Bird's-eye-view of Waltham.
Late 19th/early 20th century maps and atlases indicate that a stream crossed the western portion of #50's property near the intersection of Weston and Vernon Streets. On June 3, 1889, Nathan Warren Jr. purchased this lot from George W. Warren (see Middlesex Deed 1912:113). Nathan A. Warren paid George W. Warren $2,818.00 for the large rectangular lot- the deed does not mention "the buildings theron". Nathan A. Warren (1838-1926) was descended on both sides of his family from early New England settlers.

On the eastern portion of the property is a well-preserved, hip-roofed, cupola-topped stable. In general this house exnibits windows with decidedly Queen Anne 6/1 and 8/1 wood sash configurations. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, continued the old Warren homestead (off Main St. above Bear Hill).
In 1830, Nehemiah bought a large farm on Weston Street, formerly the property of Alpheus Gale, a brother of jacob Gale (see Nathaniel P. Banks Forin). High School in 1855. Volunteers. After the Civil War he returned to Waltham and entered the snipping Atter the cavll war he rovenete d He graduated from Waltham . During the Civil War he fought with the 45th Massachusetts business, providing him with the opportunity to travel to Africa, the Cape Verde Islands, and other points. He became a well known outdoorsman, crossing the plains of the great northwest as a member of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873 (this expedition was accompanied by General Custer's Regiment). Later he became active in stute and local politics, serving as a member of the state Republican convention from 1881-1883. He represented Waltham in the state legislature from 1880-1887.
He was also involved in the insurance business. In 1893, he was chosen president of the Boston Fire Underwriters Association. Nathan A. Warren was also an important late 19th century local historian. He wrote a well-detailed history of Waltham for D. Hamilton Hurd's 3-volume History of Middlesex County (published in 1890). He was one of the three who prepared the historical address for Waltham's sesquicentennial celebration in 1888, and was one of the orators at the memorial services, held in Waltham, for President William lickinley (1901)- In addition, he was a member of Walthams Farmer's Club, and was a guiding force in the development of the Waltham Public Library. He died in his home, at 50 Weston Street, in 1926.
