During the 1930's and early 1940's, 90 Worcester Lane was the home of Leonard Wing. Mr. Wing, an invalid, modified the building to accommodate his wheelchair. After Mr. Wing's death in the 1940's the property was purchased by the Willard Settlement Corporation and run as a nursing home until 1983. At that time the property was renovated to function as a residence.

It was originally built to house the Mt. Prospect School for Boys. This building has important historical association with the school's founder, Arthur Astor Carey, philanthropist and one of the foremost leaders in the Boy Scouts of America during the early 20th century. This house possesses integrity oi location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. #90 Worcester Lane is an example of Georgian Revival institutional architecture.
Essentially U-shaped in plan, its 5-bay main facade faces a circular driveway and is bracketed by projecting wings. Its center entrance features a heavy rusticated enframement with a prominent keystone. Itu Worcester Lane facade features a broad, 5-bay projecting segment Elanked by porches with square "Doric" posts. In general, this house's masonry facades are characterized by a high degree of symmetry, fully anframed windows with 6/6 wood sash and a raised brick belt cornice which appears between floors 1 and 2. a modillion block cornice and is surmounted by a tile roof. Three substantial, well crafted brick chimneys strike a Jacobethan note. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 90 Worcester Lane was built in 1923 as the Mt. Prospect School for Boys.
It was an experimental private school founded by Arthur Astor Carey (New York oil empire) and guided by his friend, Hugo Seikel (Boy Scouts of America), on the premise that great leaders are produced by an excellent education combined with a healthy respect for the outdoors. This, no doubt, was exemplified by Theodore Roosevelt, also a friend. On March 28, 1921, an organization called Fellowship Inc. (under the auspices of Arthur A. Carey and Hugo B. Seikel) sold this property to the Mt. Prospect Schoo1, "a charitable corporation." The 1923 Atlas shows a rectangular racher than Ü-shaped structure on #90 Worcester Lane's present site. Mr. Carey's obituary in the June 15 Daily Free Press mentions that at the time of his death the Mt. Prospect School was still under construction.
Arthur Astor Carey was born in Rome, Italy in 1856, the son of a New York family that would make their forture in oil. Mr. Carey came to Waltham in 1903, residing at 321 Crescent St. During his years in Waltham he became widely known for his philanthropic ventures. He was one of the foremost leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. He founded the free reading room on Crescent St. (late occupied by the Riverside Club). This free reading room was part of a structure that contained a pool and a gymnasium. Mr. Carey's interest in "the physical development of youth" reached its climax with his plans for the Mt. Prospect School. He was interested in establishing "an institution of the highest possible grade for the training of boys. - World War I delayed the ambitious plans for the school. Sadly, Mr. Carey died before the school was completed.
