It remains as an important component of Waltham's and Grounds, Capt. Samuel Patch.
It is also a distinguished work of architecture, com- The High School meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Robert E. Glancey contractor - both of Waltham. Constructed of brick with granite trim, this school's main facade is treated as a 4-bay projecting center pavilion with side wings. The wings exhibits three paired 12/12 windows, with recessed, round-arched, main entrances at either side of the center pavilion. The main facade features a high granite faced basement. The center pavilion exhibits a range of four Ionic pilasters, which start at the second floor sill-course, and extend beyond the third floor to the pedimented attic. Interspersed between the arches at the 3rd floor are large, multi-pane, arched windows.
Particularly noteworthy is Patch's lack of concern for the academically pure interpretation of styles - (cont) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Although Waltham had a school referred to as a 'High School' as early as 1835, it was not until 1849 that the town had schools that were clearly grammar and high schools. The present Waltham Senior High School's main block was built in 1901, with east and west wings added in 1935. The building has important historical associations with Captain Samuel Patch, architect, and Robert E. Glancy, contractor- Captain Samuel Patch (1837- 1924) was the architect of some of Waltham's largest and best known buildings. He was born in Weston on Feb. 25, 1837, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Sherman Patch.
He spent nearly half his life in Weston, moving to Waltham in the early 1880's. Patch, as an architect, was in the right place at the right time. In 1884, Waltham was incorporated as a city - it would need new municipal buildings. For more than a quarter of a century he was Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds of the City of Waltham. He was appointed Superintendent of Building in 1886 by Mayor Charles F. Stone, and held that office until his retirement in 1912, when he was succeeded by Thomas Lally. In addition to the Waltham Senior High School, was the architect of the Lexington and Moody Street fire stations, Maynard Block and Asbury Temple.

This building's side-wings are surmounted by hip-roofs with double-dormers. Projecting from the east and west walls of the 1903 wings, are two and a half story wings which date to 1933. These are con- structed of brick and are generally compatible with the original structure.
They (CONT) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, continued During the Civil War Samuel Patch enlisted as a private in the 35th Massachusetts Volunteers (1862-1864) and was commissioned Captain. He served in many Civil War battles, including Vicksburg, Antitietam, and the Siege of Petersburg. Robert E. Glancy, the Waltham Senior High School builder, was a prolific late 19th/early 20th century, Waltham builder. He was a wholesale and retail dealer in "shingles, clapboards, laths, spruce frames and boards". He started his business in 1885. In addition, he was an agent for the National Sheet Metal Roofing Company. By the early 1890's, his office was located at 53 Cushing Street, Waltham. Although school buildings seem to have been Mr. Glancy's specialty, he was responsible for many other builings within the city limits inclucing - the South Side Fire Station, the U.S.
Watch Factory, Orient Factory (bicycles), Emery Wheel Company's Factory and Davis and Farnum's Foundry. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE have been altered recently with inappropriate replacement sash, smaller than the original window openings. Three flat-roofed modern additions were added c1960. The impact of these additions is lessened by their position to the rear of the building at a lower elevation, and by the fact that they are connected by narrow walk- ways. A one story gymnasium addidion is attached to the east elevation with approxi- mately half of its bulk hidden behind the 1935 wing. A two-story ell and a three-story ell extend from the rear of the school attached to each other and to the main building by narrow walkways.
These additions certainly do not contribute to the historic character of the high school, but neither do they seriously detract from its appear- ance as a substantial turn-of-the-century school. BOUNDARY JUSTIFICATION The nomination is confined to the High School building, including all of its attached additions, and the land extending 25' from its perimenter. Excluded is a one story c1960s Trade School that occupies the northeast corner of the lot at Summer and Church Streets.
