Date June, 1986 revised by C. Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The rowhousing at 380-410 River Street possesses integrity of location, design, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant of workers' housing developed by the Boston Despite its artificial siding it reinforces de slopod by rethforteg aver Stree 19th cenetane as a clearly recognizable and uncommon form Manufacturing Company during the 19th century. River Street's 19th century character as the corridor between the main BMC mills and the bleachery that was lined with a variety of workers' housing.
It is an outstanding component of Waltham's remarkable collection of workers' housing which has been identified by MHC as one of the most comprehensive in the Boston area. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The rowhousing at 380-410 River Street is composed of two contiguous sections, distinguished by a slight change in roofline and different articial siding. The western end is clad with permastone and the eastern end is clad with vinyl clapboards. Otherwise, most details remain intact. The block rises two stories from a full basement to a gable roof. The block is divided into four bay segments with paired entries and paired stove chimneys.
At the western end the entries are surmounted by bracketed hoods, while the eastern end displays open porches with turned posts. Windows contain 2/2 wood sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCEExplain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The rowhousing at 380-410 River Street was erected by the Boston Manufacturing Company for workers during the expansion period of the 1880s. The BMC began developing workers' housing in the River Street area, which connected the main mills with the bleachery, in the 1820s. Much of this housing remains, but little in recognizable form. The uncommon rowhouse form of this block and its reasonably good state of preservation (except for artificial siding) make it particularly important.
It is a direct descendant of the Long Block which stood on the south side of the Waltham Common from 1816 until its demolition in the late 1880s. Another similiar block dating from 1889 stands at 2-24 Lawton Place (Area L). All of these blocks were of wood-frame construction; unlike Lowell, masonry BAC NoTker! BMC workers' housing was non-existant until the early 1870s (see form #55). Both of the surviving blocks are conservative in plan and detail, displaying Federal derived lunette windows in the gable ends, and bracketed Italianate entries.
