The Benjamin Clough House is one of four surviving temple-front Greek Revival style houses in the city. Its elaborate story form is characterized by Ionic columns carrying the gable pediment. Later Colonial Revival style details like the Palladian window in the gable field and the fanlight entry surround, harmonize with the original features and have acquired a significance of their own.
The house also illulstrates the mid-late 19th century develop- ment of the central Main Street area as a home for workers, small businessmen and factory owners. It possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations, and meets criteria A and C of the National Register. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Set on what is now primarily a busy commercial street with some remaining - multi-family residences, this house is a good example of a temple-front Greek Revival and - is one of the remaining four of this type in the city.
Although in only fair condition, it retains many of its original Greek Revival features: the two-story portico supported by : fluted columns with four-sided Ionic capitals, corner returns, paneled corner boards, full-length first floor windows with corniced heads, and a gable-end side entrance with fluted pilasters and Greek fret molding across the top. Other features appear to be Colonial Revival additions: the Palladianesque window with dentils in the gable, the balustrade on the second floor porch and Chippendale railing on the first, brackets under the balcony, and the elliptical fanlight and sidelights with leaded tracery around the entrance. This example retains its original clapboard siding and multi-pane sash. - See # 97, 112, Area E HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
This house was apparently built ca. 1855 by Benjamin F. Clough, who had come Maine about 1853 and started a shoe-making business in a factory behind this house. factory first made brogans, reportedly for sale to slave owners, and in 1857 employed 60 people. During the Civil War it switched to the production of men's, women's, and - children's shoes. This house was acquired by Clough's son-in-law, George J. Barker, who later became president of a large lumber company on Bacon Street. The Barkers, who owned this *house well into the twentieth century, were probably responsible for the Colonial Revival additions.
