Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Built in 1877, the Newton St. Bridge is the only late 19th c. bridge spanning the Charles River in Waltham which has not been widened or substantially rebuilt.
It represents the work of Concord, MA bridge specialist Hiram Blaisdell, and is a handsome example of a triple- arch stone bridge. Further, it was built on the site of Waltham's first bridge across the Charles which dated from 1761-62. The Newton Street Bridge possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important design features and evaluate in terms of other structures within the community. The Newton Street Bridge is a handsome, highly functional example of late 19th c. masonry bridge design. It's three broad eliptical arches are edged with granite voussoirs. In general, this bridge's granite blocks are rock faced.
Visible at the uppermost portion of this structure is a border of granite block whose narrow sides exhibit irregularly spaced notches. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain historical importance of structure and how the structure relates to the development of the community. Edmund L. Sanderson, in Waltham as a Precinct of Watertown and as a Town, 1630-1884 notes that "in the latter part of 187], the stone bridge at Newton Street was built." This date d a is verified by the Waltham Town Report of 1878. Hiram Blaisdell of Concord, Ma is credited with the design of this bridge. The first bridge to span this portion of the Charles River was built in 1761-1762. It's construction was initiated by militia Captain Joshua Fuller of Newton and Stephen Shite, a Newton resident with interests in Waltham. The 1761-1762 Newton St.
Bridge was the first bridge over the Charles River within the limits of Waltham. This bridge was built in cooperation with Newton.
