Date - August, 1986 revised by C. Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Aaron Martin House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work- manship, feeling and association. Built for American Watch Company machinist and real es- tate speculator Aaron Martin, it is illustrative of the. "Watch's" development of the South Side in the second half of the 19th century.
It is also important as one of Waltham's more full-blown examples of the Queen Anne style that remains in a well-preserved state. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Aaron Martin House is located on lower Moody Street, near its intersection with Crescent Street. It is a fine example of an early 1890s wood-frame Queen Anne style house with many exuberant. features. behind lively projecting forms such as a front porch with punched and cut gingerbread decora- tion at the base and railings, an oriel over the porch with an elaborate window enframement, and no less than three, two-story bays on the front, rear and side elevations.
The window surround exhibits an incized floral motif and dentils, while the bays are paneled and divided by saw-cut shingle aprons. Projecting from the hip roof is an off-center tower with multi- pane eyebrow windows and a bulbous, bell-shaped roof. Hip roofed double dormers appear at the main and south facades. This house ranks among the better preserved examples of the HREERE domestic Queen Anne style in Waltham, retaining its distinctive form, materials and design elements. Other houses of similiar quality are form #s 32, 58, 121, 150, 173. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in Tocal ör state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Aaron Martin House is part of the South Side's small but choice collection of Queen Anne style houses.
It is one of the few not located on Crescent Street with its river views, and more importantly is one of the few not altered with artificial siding. Like most of its counterparts, it was built for a skilled American Waltham Watch Company em- ployee in the early 1890s. Waltham/Watertown directories of this period first list Martin at this address in 1893; his occupation was machinist. Further research may indicate that he was a Watch Co. department foreman. This house's lot was vacant in 1886 and owned by the Hall family of 107 Crescent Street. It is clearly shown on the 1900 atlas labeled Aaron Martin. - - BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Maps/Atlases--1874, 1881, 1883, 1886, 1890. Waltham/Watertown Directories--1890s.
