Jenkins 4/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Henry Stewart House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work- manship, feeling and associations. It was built in the first decade of the 20th century as the gardener's residence for the Cornelia Otis Warren estate, Cedar Hill, and is thus part of Waltham's great country estate tradition. It is also Waltham's finest example of - the Jacobethan style, and one of the finest representations in the Boston area. The Stewart House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Located at the corner of Beaver and Linden Streets, the Stewart House is an excellent ex- ample of the Jacobethan style, exhibiting many well-defined characteristic features. It is built on a I-plan, and rises stories to a slate gable roof. The projecting ends of the T are faced with brick and culminate in florid, curved Flemish gables: they also dis- play heavy beltcourses and elaborate cast iron ties. The stem of the Tis faced with half- timbering at the second story. Windows are paired and tripled and contain multi-pane sash. The entry is located in a one-story brick porch at the angle of the T. Tall multi-pot chimneys enliven the silhouette.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built at some point between 1900-1911, this house was evidently build to house Cornelia Otis Warren's gardener. By 1915, it was occupied by Henry Stewart, the Otis estate's gardener. By 1939, Stewart is listed as a commercial florist at this address. For many years this lot was part of the Warren estate, known as Cedar Hill. The main house, a second Empire mansion, was situated on a hill overlooking the north side of Beaver St. - The Warren estate encompassed approximately 200 acres on both sides of Beaver St. For -many years it was owned by Boston/Waltham philanthropist and Cumberland Mills heiress - Cornelis Otis Warren. This land was acquired by the Mass. Girl Scouts Council during the 1920's.
Thus historically, this house is a part of Waltham's tradition of great country estates which originated in the late 18th century.
