Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Joseph Andrews house is one of the best examples in the city of an Italianate house with wide overhanging eaves. It was built by one of Waltham's well-known nineteenth century. builders and was one of the first houses erected in this area after Linden Street was constructed in the mid-1840s. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was occupied by persons important in the development of Waltham.
It possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criteria *a1though the gaseonas Registered Hrvaod ic Plases,a, wt re aus eptpositbon on Linden St., mid-19th cnetury origins) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Set in a residential area of predominantly recent twentieth century houses, this imposing center-entrance Italianate has been moved and has lost rear ells. It nonetheless - retains most of its original features; it is characterized by its wide overhanging eaves with paired brackets and deep corner returns on the gable ends. The prominent gabled dormers have similar deep corner returns. paneled cornerboards. transom and sidelights. The semicircular entrance porch with Iuscan columns and the i».
There is a cornice across the entire facade and The windows have simple corniced heads and the entrance has a two-story rear ell with a doorway with sidelights and an elliptical fanlight are Colonial Re- vival additions. The house is on a cement foundation, testimony to the fact that it was moved relatively recently. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built in 1851 by Charles Harrington for Frances and Joseph Andrews. Harrington worked at the Bleachery but nonetheless also managed to be one of Waltham's important nineteenth century builders. In 1845 he purchased from George Lyman a large tract of land that extended from Beaver Street halfway to Main Street on either side of what is now Linden Street.
He then laid out and constructed half of Linden Street (the Town built the rest) and built three houses, producing what could be considered one of Waltham's first suburban developments (see also 209 Linden Street form). Harrington believed that houses should be set well back from the street in order to give them "plenty of breathing room"and to provide wider avenues for travel (Waltham Free Press-Tribune, June 1, 1888). This house was originally located back about where the circle of Cedar Hill Lane is now, on a lot that was 3.9 acres. The Andrews were apparently members of the New Jerusalem Church and moved to Waltham from West Roxbury in order to join the Swedenborgian congregation centered at Piety Corner (see 379 Lexington Street form). HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (cont'd) In 1865 the Andrews sold the house and in 1870 it was purchased by John R. Farnum, a partner in Davis and Farnum iron founders. This business, which had been started on Moody Street in 1844 by R. P. Davis, had, in 1870, just moved to an extensive new site off.
Foundry Avenue. Farnum lived in Rose Hill Castle off Main Street and this Linden Street house was occupied in the 1870s by his partner, Frederick J. Davis. In 1884 the property was acquired by Fred A. Houdlette, also in the iron business in Boston, and in 1887 it was sold to George Tyler of George Tyler and Company, manufacturers of agricultural tools and machinery in Boston. 1or 13g sko had haved to Brt hon. Tyler died in the early 1890s and the house was then occupied by his widow; by 1899 she had moved to Brighton, MA, and David W. Bond, a superior court judge, lived in the house. Judge Bond died in 1911; by 1917 the house had been acquired by Anthony W. Recka, one of Waltham's "milkmen, " who moved his milk business from Newton Arouttod tby Street to this location.
In the 1950s the former Andrews estate was developed; Cedar Hill Lane was laid out, the land divided into house lots, and the rear ells removed from this house, which was then moved forward to its present location.
