Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Frank J. Tyler House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, work- manship, feeling and association. It is significant as an elaborate, towered example of the Queen Anne style--one of the best in the city. It is also representative of the early phase of Waltham's suburbanization. The Tyler House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Tyler House is set well back from Linden Street in a quiet residential neighborhood of predominantly 20th century houses. It is set off from the street by an old stone wall. It is one of Waltham's distinctive towered Queen Anne style houses (see forms # 41, 32, 58, 121 and 150. In this case, the three story tower with conical cap projects from the body of the house for its full height. It is balanced by a projecting cross-gable. The entry is paneled and framed by transom and sidelights. A bracketed oriel is located on the north side elevation. A long arched window with multi-paned upper sash and a semi-circular fan is located on the south elevation. A porch with triple Tuscan columns extends across most HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity.
Despite the elaborate towered Queen Anne form of this house, it appears to have been built and used for rental purposes. It was constructed in 1894 by Frank J. Tyler, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery in Boston; Tyler lived at 258 Linden Street at the time (#172). Tyler subdivided the lot and built this house on speculation. He sold it, with a mortgage - of $4,500, in 1895 to a woman from Boston. In the next 12 years the house was resold nine times, invariably to non-resident owners who must have used it as a rental property, al- though apparently an unprofitable one, perhaps because of the distance to the center. The * house was finally acquired in 1907 by Annie F. Dowd of Malden, the wife of Michael J. Dowd. The Dowds owned the house into the 1920s but continued to rent it. In 1923 it was occupied by George E. Kittredge, a chemist.
