Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Nathan Sanderson I house is one of the city's surviving Federal period farmhouses that preserves its early features. It was the residence of a family associated with the Piety Corner area since the 17th century, and helps to illustrate that area's early settlement and agricultural origins. It possesses integrity of location, design, ma- terials, workmanship, feeling and assciations with Waltham's agricultural history. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Sanderson House is a jymmetrical five bay structure that rises two stories to a gable roof with large central chimney. It is clapboard clad and trimmed with narrow corner The facade is centered on an entry with narrow molded architrave. Flanking win- dows, as well as the five aligned at the second story, contain 6/9 sash and also have narrow molded architraves. A c1920s ell extends from the rear of this two bay deep house. It is traditionally believed that this house originated as a two room, l story cottage c1783. Sometime before 1834 the roof was raised and a rear lean-to added; later, the full two story form was achieved. The vernacular appearance of the house supports a pre-1834 date for the latter roof change as well.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built by Nathan Sanderson I, reportedly about 1783 (Sanderson: 1927: 20). Nathan had acquired the property in the early 1780s from his brother Jonathan, who in turn, had inherited it from their father, Jonathan Sanderson Sr., after the latter's death in 1781. This house is on the site of an earlier one built c1707 by Edward Sanderson, a son of Jonathan Sanderson Sr. (see 428 Lexington Street) and may incorporate the cellar of the: first house. The present house was originally built with only two rooms on the first floor and an attic room above; before 1834 the roof was raised and a leanto added, pro- viding four rooms on the first floor and two on the second.
Later the leanto roof was raised, giving the house its present Federal profile. The north ell was added in the 1920s (Sanderson: 1927: 21). CONT.
