Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Sanderson-Clark farmhouse is a good example of a Federal farmhouse and one of the few in the city that retains a sense of a working farm, with a sizeable lot and an assemblage of outbuildings including a barn and stable. It was associated with Waltham's agricultural history through the early 20th century when it was owned by a market gardner. It possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations.
As an exceptionally well preserved agricultural remnant, it meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other bufldings within the community. Set back from a winding street in a residential area that has a few eighteenth and nineteenth century houses and a great deal of twentieth century infill, this property retains some sense of being a working farm and is one of five Federal farmhouses in the area (see also 107 Lincoln Street and 380, 399, and 562 Lexington Street forms). The house is a classic five-by-one bay Federal farmhouse with two rear chimneys, very plain window surrounds, and full-length sidelights. The porch with its turned posts is clearly a later addition, as aro the various ells on the east and north.
The farm buildings include a large three-by-five bay barn and a long stable, now a garage. The two story house along with its two and one story south wings, is clapboard clad and enclosed by gable roofs. Window sash is generally 2/2, dating to the later 19th century. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This house was built in 1831 by Marshall Sanderson, a stonecutter and youngest son of Nathan Sanderson I of the house at 107 Lincoln Street. Marshall had purchased a small parcel from his father and his cousin Sybil Sanderson, then the owner of the Sanderson house formerly at 428 Lexington Street (see form). In 1834, Marshall Sanderson sold this house to Nathan Clark, a nephew of John and Jonas Clark of 362 and 399 Lexington Street, respectively.
In 1845 Clark sold the property to his older brother Daniel, a shoemaker whose shop is still attached to the house. Daniel shared the house with a younger brother Henry; after Daniel's death in the early 1870g, the property changed hands many times for a few years, during which it was occupied by Joseph Maynard. It was finally acquired in 1876 by William G. Childs, the owner of the house at 528 Lexington (see form), who immediately sold it to Francis Clark Smith, a nephew of the Clark brothers. Smith was listed in the 1899 Directory as a market gardner; he was also one of the original members of the Prospect Tennis Club and from 1888 to 1892 the club's courts were located on the lawn in front of this house (see North Lexington Historic District form).
