Jenkins 2/88 -NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Perex Smith House is one of Waltham's finest transitional Greek Revival/Italianate style houses. Italianate features include its symmetrical three bay facade, deep cornice trimmed with sawn brackets, and variety of window treatments including standard windows with pro- jecting heads, round arched gable windows and a bracketed bay window on the side elevation. Greek Revival elements include the center entry with severe sidelight/transom surround, and the wide cornerboards and fascia/entablature.

The house also helps to illustrate the mid- 19th century development of Piety Corner as a fashionable residential neighborhood, and is associated with a prominent local family. setting, mATGHTYEC TURALESTANTAIZANCE teeiing and association and meets criteria A and C of Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Set back from a winding residential street with a few eighteenth and nineteenth century houses and a great deal of twentieth century infill, this is one of two Italianate houses with Greek ,evival features in the area and one of the best examples of this type in the city. The large house lot retains much of its pre-twentieth century rustic charm. The house is L-shaped in form and its substantial main block is characterized by a three-bay, center hall, plain main facade with two-bay end wall gables.

Covered with clapboards, its corners are accentuated by heavy Doric pilasters composed of narrow vertical flush boards. Its center entrance is flanked by sidelights and is surmounted by a narrow transom and a blind, elliptical arch with a paneled sunburst-like pattern. In - general, windows are fully enframed with projecting wooden sills and cornice-headed lintels in the Italianate manner. Windows contain 6/6 wood sash. Above the second floor windows is a heavy fascia board. The house is enclosed by a broad gable roof (with HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built by Perez Smith, apparently about 1851.

The date was determined by a report that Smith used the first Pond End Schoolhouse, which had just been replaced, as a tool shed while building this house, and the Town did not sell the school until 1851 (Sanderson 1919:42). Smith had, however, acquired the land as early as 1846 when he bought 22 acres that formerly were owned by the Sandersons who lived at the corner of vLexington and Lincoln streets (see 428 Lexington Street form). Most of Smith's land was on the south side of Lincoln Street near this house, but one lot comprised the triangle now formed by Lincoln, Curve, and Lexington streets and extended to the north side of Curve Street (see 508 Lexington Street form). Perez Smith was related to Nathan Smith further up on Lincoln Street and lived in a house on Main Street before this one was built. He farmed the land and, after his death in the 1870s, his son Edward P.

Smith (1841-1935) inherited the property. Edward Smith became president of the Waltham Co-operative Bank in 1895; he was also treasurer of the Waltham Gas Company and chairman of the Board of Assessors from 1892-1897 and 1918-1920. Edward Smith owned this property until his death in 1935. - BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Hunt, Marjorie Childs. Article in Piety Cornerite, v. 5, no.9. Card file.
