Seasholes Organization Waltham Historical Comm. Date August 1986 revised C. Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Marshall Smith House is a well detailed and preserved example of a vernacular sidehall plan Greek Revival style house in the city. Its story form is detailed with a full entab- lature, pedimented gable ends, cornerboards and a full Doric porch. With its well documented succession of owners, this house is a particularly good illustration of the development of the north central Main Street area in the mid-19th century as a home for workers and small businessmen.

It possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Set on a residential street of predominantly nineteenth century houses very near a major commercial district, this house is an excellent example of a modest side-wall center entrance Greek Revival house with full porch and one of the few houses of this type in the city. Ihe house is characterized by a pedimented attic, a plain entablature and. cornerboards, fluted Doric columns supporting the porch and a brick foundation. The unusual porch balustrade, the bay on the north, and the long ell on the west are all probably later additions.

It is a clapboard clad structure rising 22 stories to a gable roof. Its symmetrical, traditional five bay facade is centered on a double entry. Flanking windows, as well as the five aligned above, contain original 6/6 sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was probably built in 1846 or 1847 by Marshall Smith, a chair and harness maker. Smith owned it for only a year; it then passed through various hands, was owned for about 10 years by Stephen Stone, a yeoman, and was auctioned to pay his debts. It was finally acquired in 1865 by Phebe Foster, a widow. The Fosters occupied it until about 1912; it was then acquired by Patrick J.

Healy, a teamster, and in 1923 the members of his large family were variously employed as a stenographer, phone operator, salesman, bookkeeper, electrician, and lineman.
