Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Nahum Hardy House is a well-detailed and preserved example of a side hall plan Greek Revival style house. Built c1845, it is located on the old Lexington Road on land owned by Harvard College from 1783-1839 during which time it was known as Colleg Farms. house possesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and asso- ciation. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of , other buildings within the community.
Set on the corner of a major thoroughfare and a quiet residential street in an area of predominantly twentieth century houses, this is one of the few Greek Revival houses in the area and one of a number of fine examples in the city. Although it has had some additions, it preserves many of its original features: a pedimented attic; a full entablature with a distinctive dentil-like course that is actually constructed of round wooden pegs; pilastered cornerboards; two side chimneys; window architraves extending to floor level on first floor windows; and a gable end side entrance with fluted pilasters and sidelights. The gabled dormers and portico with Tuscan columns are probably later additions as are the many ells, although those on the west have the same dentil-like peg detail. It is a :2½ story, clapboard clad, sidehall plan house with a two story rear ell.
Windows retain original 6/6 sash. It is set off from the street by a granite retaining wall and granite posts define the driveway. : HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house is on land that was known as the College Farm because for many years it was owned by Harvard College. It was also known as the Rogers Farm because the money for its purchase came from the sale of land in Rowley, MA, left to Harvard by an Ebenezer Rogers. Harvard purchased the Waltham farm, about 160 acres comprising most of the land between Collge Farm Road and Hardy Pond, in 1728 apparently as an income property, for it was leased to a series of tenants.
In 1819, Nahum Hardy became the tenant; in 1830 he made an agreement with Harvard to buy the property, and in 1839 the agreement was finalized; the sale also included the pew and the horse shed at the meeting house that had customarily been reserved for the tenant of the College Farm (M.D.384:99). After acquiring the property, Nahum Hardy built this house. It was probably constructed ca. 1845, for the unusual dentil-like detail on the entablature is exactly 1ike that on the Amos Stearns House at 1079 Trapelo Road (see form), known to have been built in 1845, and suggests that the two houses were built at about the same time by the same carpenter. About 1860 Hardy moved to a house on Curve Street and sold this one to John McGregor, a farmer; after his death the house was acquired in the late 1890s by Edwin - B. Pratt, also a farmer.
During the first decade of the twentieth century the tennis court of the Prospect Tennis Club was located at this house. The Pratts still owned the house in 1923. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES .
