Johnson House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. It is a significant as the most elaborate and well- preserved example of the Queen Anne style in the Piety Corner area, and one of the best in the entire city. . It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
Set on a corner with a great deal of traffic in a residential area of large nineteenth and early twentieth century houses, this is the most elaborate Queen Anne house in the area. It retains many of its original features and finishes: an octagonal tower with arched windows and butted shingles; butted and fishscale shingles on the three-sided bay; curved brackets with drops under the cornice of the cutaway bay on the south; small rectàngular windows with bull's eyes flanking the tower; stepped windows on the north side; fluted turned porch posts; and a molded decoration under the eyebrow roof on the porch. Like other similiar examples of the style (#s 32, 41, 58, 121, 173) it success- fully camouflages its boxy hip-roof form with lively projecting turrets, cross-gables and porches.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built in 1894 on the site of the house of Deacon Jonathan Sanderson, Sr. (1646-1735), one of the earliest settlers in Piety Corner (see Piety Corner Historic District form) and one of the deacons after whom the area was named. Jonathan Sanderson, Sr. was also one of the largest landowners in the Piety Corner area: in the 1680s he had : bought 160 acres, and in 1689 he built a house at the corner of Lexington and Lincoln Streets. Jonathan Sanderson Sr.'s property was sold to his grandson, Deacon Jonathan Sanderson III (1700-1790), who in turn deeded it to his son Josiah. Ca. 1771 Josiah built a new house east of the original dwelling, making the old house an ell of the new one, and in 1822 left the property to his daughter Sybil.
The latter sold off most of the land, but in 1851 left the house and five acres to her cousins Grace and Polly Sanderson. Grace died in 1855 and Polly sold the property to George Green, a protege of her brother Thomas and a farmer, trapper, and neighborhood "character." Polly reserved the right to live in the east section of the house until her death, which occurred in 1881, and Green continued to occupy the house until 1893 when he sold it to Fannie M. Johnson, the wife of Newell D. Johnson, a dentist on Moody Street. In 1894 the Johnsons took down the old Sanderson house and built this one on the site and still owned the property in 1923.
