Jenkins 2/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Francis Buttrick House is one of four surviving temple-front Greek Revival style houses in the city.
Its elaborate 2½ story form is characterized by fluted Doric columns carrying a full entablature and the gable pediment. Although it is now sided with wood shingles and regretably has lost. one of its columns, its Greek detail is the most correct of any of the four temple-fronts. The also illustrates the mid-late-19th century development of the cen- tral Main Street area as a home for workers, small businessmen and factory owners. It pos- sesses integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations and meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
Set on a residential street of closely-spaced late nineteenth century multi-family houses, this is a good example of a temple-front Greek Revival and is one of only four of this type in the city. This house retains many of its original features: a pedimented attic, full entablature, a two-story portico supported by fluted Doric columns (one missing), full length windows on the first and second floors, and pedimented window heads and front door surround. At the rear is an Italianate barn with a center gable (now converted to a residence). Alterations include application of wood shingle siding (early 20th century) and the regretable loss of one column. Original multi-pane sash is retained. This house appears to have been built before 1852 and was originally located on Charles Street just east of Harvard Street, then called Brown's Lane. In 1863 and 1864 the Charles Street lot, as well as the one on Harvard Street where the house is now located, were acquired by Francis Buttrick, who apparently moved this house around the corner to its present site. The house seems to have been always used as a rental property, even after Buttrick sold it in 1886 to Arthur Hayes and George Wright. From 1899 to 1907 it was occupied by Edward E. Cutler, a "milkman" who later moved to Trapelo Road, and in 1923 by Samuel Margolis, a painter, Lewis Michelson, a produce dealer, and Albert Michelson, a peddler.
