Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) St. Charles Borromeo Church possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as Waltham's second Catholic parish which reflects the changing make-up of the South Side population from Waltham Watch employed/protestant dominance to a multi-ethnic/multi-denominational mix.
The church building also ranks among the finest examples of early 20th century Italian Renaissance Re- vival style church architecture in the Boston area. The church thus meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The site of the church was occupied by cottages which were moved to make way for construction in 1915. One of the cottages later became the Sexton's house. Designed on a latin-cross plan to seat 1200, St. Charles is built of terra cotta brick with stone trim. The architect was James F. Monaghan; the contractor, his father, John Monaghan. The style is basically Italian Renaissance. The original cost was estimated at $70,00. After halting to reduce accumulated debt, construction recommenced in 1922.
In 1927, a fire gutted the almost finished structure, which was refurbished in the same year. The imposing street facade is marked by two colossal Corinthian columns that enframe the main door and circular window above it. The whole is surmounted by a pediment with modillion and dentils. The tympanum of the main door depicts, apparently, St. Charles ministering to the poor and sick (cont) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Deciding that a new parish was needed to serve Waltham's catholics, Cardinal O'Connel1 sent the Reverend Peter Walsh (then curate at St. Joseph's in Boston's West-end) to establish St. Charles in October 1909.
It is believed that the dedication to the great counter-reformation Milanese Cardinal and Saint was made because of the parish's proximity to the Charles River, and because its foundation dates it close to his feast day. On November 7th 1909, the first parish mass was said in Endicott Hall in the A.O.U.W. building on Moody Street. The initial membership of the parish was estimated to be 2,200. In 1910, construction on a parochial school was started at the corner of Taylor and Hall Streets. The Sanctuary in the school was completed in time for Easter Sunday, 1911. In 1915, Cardinal 0'Connell laid the cornerstone of the present church. The first mass was held in the unfinished building on December 24th, 1916. After a halt in the construction due to the necessity of reducing debt, building resumed in 1922.
On May 30th 1927, as the church neared completion, a disastrous fire broke out gutting the interior and causing a loss estimated at more than $10,000. Unardes borromeo unurci t40 Hall & Cushing Streets ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE, Saint Charles Borromeo, continued of Milan (the same theme is echoed in the stained glass window on the left of the crossing). The aisled nave, with Tuscan pillars and round-headed clerestory windows, leads to the crossing. A one-story chapel is connected to the transept on the right.
Murals in the pendentives of the crossing depict the four evangelists. The mural in the right transept depicts St. Charles giving conmunion in the hand, to his nephew Hloysius Gonzaga on August 22nd, 1588. This mural was cieaned, and its subject matter revealed at the same time as the Catholic Church decided to allow the reception of communion in the hand. Ine mural was featured in diocesan newspapers through the country. The sanctuary arrangements of the church have undergone changes reflecting liturgical fashions with their reordering decided upon by the Second Vatican Council. Originally against the sanctuary wall, the main altar now stands at the crossing under a corona suspended from the ceiling. In 1959, in preparation for the parish's golden jubilee, a baldequin (or supported canopy) vas installed. This was subsequently removed. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, continued year.
The interior appointments have gone through a series of changes both prior to the Second Vatican Council under Father McCarthy (elevated to the rank of Domestic Prelate or Monsignor in 1957) and subsequently since the Council mandated the Liturgical arrangements now in force. In 1979, the parish continuing to play a flourishing role in the life of the South Side, celebrated its 70th anniversary. In 1982, Waltham welcomed home the Iranian hostage, William Keogh, in a massive homecoming parade.
