Jenkins 3/88 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Waltham Water Works Shop possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as a unique component of Waltham's turn-of-the-century municipal building campaign related to its establishment as a city in 1884.

It is also an extremely well-preserved utilitarian building with some Queen Anne style features and innovative structural systems of the period. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Waltham Water Works Shop is a highly functional, structurally progressive and stylistically conservative masonry municipal building. Its 5-bay x 4 bay main block is characterized by planar red brick surfaces pierced by standard size windows with 6/6 wood sash and rock faced granite sills and lintels. The wide center entrance is surmounted by a large rockfaced granite lintel. Between the center windows of the second floor is a date placque which reads "1894".

The roof's elongated pediment contains a smaller stone pedíment with three incized and interlocking W's which stand for "Waltham Water Works". Other subtle decorative features include a granite watertable, a light beltcourse separating the stories, a sawtooth course at the second story impost level, and a well-detailed corbelled course be- neath granite coping and a flat roof. Structurally this building encompasses some progressive (for 1894) features. For example, the basement has a cemented floor while the first floor is composed of "expanded iron supported by steel arched channels and I-beams." HISTORICAL Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built in 1894, the Waltham Water Works Shop, along with the Lexington and Moody St.

Fire Stations (1887 and 1890, respectively) and the Police Station (1890), date from the first ten years of Waltham's incorporation as a city. During the 1880's/1890's new municipal buildings were erected to meet the demands of a growing population. In 1893, over 385,000,000 gallons of water were pumped, a gain of 50,000,000 over the previous year. In September 1894, , an appropriation of $10,000.00 was made by the Board of Aldermen for a new workshop and stable. on the South side of Felton St. for these buildings on April 25, 1894 , At that time, the City of Waltham paid Mary E. Ryan et al. $3500 for this lot. The deed stipulated that a building on this site had to be moved within 60 days.

Work on the new Water Works began on October 1, 1894, but "owing to the prevalence of cold and stormy weather not as much progress was made as was desired." Waltham City documents describe the new shop as being "built of brick 40 by 70 feet, two stones and basement." This building was originally heated by an H.T. boiler, 48 inches by 12 feet and made at Roberts Iron Works. In addition, this building was illuminated by both gas and electric lights. The 1894 Waltham City Documents note that "The machine and work shop are to be located in the basement and supplied with all needed tools and appliances. The basement has a ceiling 9 feet high, a cemented floor and is well supplied with light. The first floor is of expanded iron and cement, supported by steel arched channels and I beams. On this floor will be located the office, toilet room, carríage room, wash stand, stalls for six.

horses, etc. The upper floor , is for hay and grain and store room."
